History: from agronomy to university

The Dschang university centre was created by Presidential Decree No. 77/108 of 28 April 1977. In May 1978 it absorbed the National Advanced School of Agronomy (ENSA), previously in Yaoundé, and Dschang's Institute of Agricultural Techniques. According to Wikipedia, the project was funded by the US government (USD 44 million in grants and loans), Cameroon (about 74 million) and Belgium (about 8 million), with the University of Florida in charge of academic programmes from 1982. The centre became the University of Dschang in the reform of 19 January 1993 and opened up to humanities, law, economics and sciences.

Strengths

  • Agronomy: FASA continues ENSA, the country's first school of agricultural engineers, absorbed in 1978.
  • Entrepreneurship: according to the rector, interviewed by Cameroon Tribune in December 2025, the university has given rise to 150 start-ups, 350 permanent and 600 temporary jobs, with an incubator (CATI2-UDs) and a Pierre Castel chair.
  • The Bandjoun institute of technology bears the name of industrialist Victor Fotso, who founded it.
  • A wide network: according to Cameroon Tribune (December 2023), the university oversees 52 private higher-education institutes, in Cameroon and also in Gabon, DR Congo and Chad.

Student life

In Dschang, the rector champions the idea that a motivated student can leave with “two diplomas”: an academic degree and a business. Doctoral studies reopened for 2025-2026, with admission quotas set according to the number of senior academics. As elsewhere, the SYNES strike launched on 5 January 2026 affected the university.

Admission and registration

Pre-registration is online at sigesonline.univ-dschang.org. The official website announced registration for levels I to IV from 7 September and for post-master's year 1 on 26 October. Baccalauréat or GCE A Level holders are admitted to the general faculties; the FMSP recruits by entrance exam. The basic university fee is CFA 50,000: see the cost of higher education page.
