The story

Thirty years after independence, as a generation takes to the streets against one-party rule, corruption and economic failure, Jean-Marie Teno looks back over Cameroon's history. He mixes archive footage, journalistic investigation and fictional scenes to examine the lasting effects of colonisation on politics, culture and the media.

Why it matters

Jean-Marie Teno's best-known documentary. It takes Cameroon, colonised in turn by three European powers, as a case study. It pays particular attention to the written word, once a tool of colonial domination that can also become a means of liberation.

Filming

Cameroon; a Cameroon, France and Germany co-production (Les Films du Raphia).
