The story

Adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs: a child of the English aristocracy, raised by apes in Africa, is brought back as an adult to Scotland, where he inherits the Greystoke estate.

Why it matters

It is one of the few major international productions shot partly in Cameroon; filming began in November 1982. It earned three Academy Award nominations and made Christopher Lambert's name; he would film in Cameroon again twenty-five years later in White Material.

Filming

African scenes shot in Korup National Park, in the South-West; English scenes in the United Kingdom (Hatfield House, Floors Castle, Elstree Studios). According to Wikipedia, the waterfall in the opening is the Ekom falls.

Awards and selections

  • Three Academy Award nominations (1985): Best Supporting Actor (Ralph Richardson), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Makeup
  • Best Cinematography, British Society of Cinematographers, 1984

Cast

  • Christopher Lambert — Tarzan / John Clayton
  • Andie MacDowell — Jane Porter
  • Ralph Richardson — the 6th Earl of Greystoke
  • Ian Holm — Philippe d'Arnot

What sources disagree on

Sources contradict each other on the exact locations: French Wikipedia puts Cape Bimbia "in Korup National Park", although the two are far apart, and English Wikipedia places the Ekom falls there, whereas they lie in the Moungo, near Melong. Only Korup is cited by both.
