What is it?

A traditional fermented beer brewed from red sorghum and millet. Its process follows the same steps as modern beer.

Where does it come from?

Associated people(s) : Mafa, Guiziga, Toupouri, Fulani (Maroua area)

A drink common across the Sahel: the same kind of beer exists in Chad and Nigeria under other names. Neither the name nor the process is unique to Cameroon.

Drunk in company, at the cabaret where it is sold.

Origin and tradition

In the North, millet beer is a full urban trade, tied to the cabaret, a place of sociability. It has spread to Yaoundé and Douala.
