Where is Kumbo?

Kumbo is in the North-West Region of Cameroon, about 400 km from Yaoundé by road.

Kumbo, also known as Banso, is the capital of the Bui division, in the North-West region, at an altitude of around 2,000 metres. With 80,212 inhabitants at the 2005 census, it was the country's fifteenth-largest city and the second in the North-West after Bamenda. The capital of the Nso kingdom, it lies on the Ring Road, the great loop road linking the region's towns.

History and origin of the name

According to oral tradition, the Nso dynasty was founded by Princess Ngonnso, who left Kimi, present-day Bankim, among the Tikar after a succession dispute; her descendants eventually settled at Kumbo. In the early twentieth century a German expedition led by Curt von Pavel took the statue of Ngonnso to Berlin; its return was authorised in 2022 but was still pending at the end of 2025. Missionaries of the Sacred Heart arrived in 1912 and founded their mission the following year.

What to see

  • The palace of the Fon of Nso, the kingdom's paramount ruler, with its wood-carved buildings, at the heart of Ngam-Ngonnso, the great Nso cultural week.
  • The cathedral, built entirely of stone in the 1950s on a hilltop, and the bishop's seat since 1983.
  • The Musa Heritage Gallery, founded in 1996, which displays some 400 works of Grassfields art, including wood carvings and traditional musical instruments.

Economy and local life

The Nso are known for their Irish potatoes, sought after across Cameroon. The town is also a medical hub: St Elizabeth Catholic General Hospital in Shisong, run by the Tertiary Sisters of St Francis, has housed since 2009 a cardiac surgery centre described as the only one of its kind in Central Africa. Lamnso is the everyday language, alongside Pidgin and English.

What to eat

The Nso staple is corn fufu, eaten with huckleberry leaves (the North-West's "njama njama"), cooked with very little palm oil and salt.

Practical information

The altitude gives the town a cool climate. Kumbo is 95 to 110 kilometres from Bamenda and about 400 kilometres from Yaoundé by road. The town is at the heart of the Anglophone crisis: the "Bui Clean" military operation in May and June 2021, a separatist attack on the Rapid Intervention Battalion base on 10 April 2024, and the abduction of passengers near the town in October 2025. In June 2026, insecurity was still delaying Ring Road works between Kumbo and Ndu: the security situation should be checked before any trip.
